Malawi will Thursday join the world in commemorating International Peace Day, which is observed on September 21.<\/p>\n
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly recognises the day as a special occasion devoted to strengthening ideals of peace in the world.<\/p>\n
Organisers of the day in Malawi, People\u2019s Federation for National Peace and Development (Pefenap), said during a press briefing yesterday that they would combine the activity with that promoted by Civicus, a network of international organisations that work towards promoting \u201crespect, safety and dignity for everyone forced to flee their homes in search of a better life\u201d.<\/p>\n
Pefenap Executive Director, Edward Chaka, said this year\u2019s activities would include a peace march, media briefings and public awareness campaigns to be held from today [Wednesday] to Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Malawi, we will hold activities under the theme \u2018Together for Peace, Respect, Safety and Dignity for All\u2019. In our case, we are focusing on topics that are relevant to Malawi, namely the holding of free and fair by-elections in October as well as the general elections of 2019. We are also promoting respect for patients, after observing that some health workers have been going on strike in protest against poor working conditions,\u201d Chaka said.<\/p>\n
Chaka said time has come for Malawians to fight for inclusivity by supporting disadvantaged people such as refugees.<\/p>\n
\u201cPefenap, academic institutions and individual citizens should join hands in a global partnership in support of diversity, non-discrimination and acceptance of refugees and migrants. This is the reason the day was initiated during the United Nations Summit for Refugees and Migrants on September 19 2016,\u201d Chaka said.<\/p>\n
This year, United Nations Secretary- General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, has asked members of the global community to avoid human errors when dealing with others.<\/p>\n
