{"id":53724,"date":"2017-09-18T13:41:20","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T11:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=53724"},"modified":"2017-09-18T13:41:20","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T11:41:20","slug":"lazarus-chakwera-laughs-off-single-digit-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/09\/18\/lazarus-chakwera-laughs-off-single-digit-inflation\/","title":{"rendered":"Lazarus Chakwera laughs off single digit inflation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>M<\/strong>alawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, has said single digit inflation which does not translate to socio-economic growth among the majority of Malawians is nothing but a fluke.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi\u2019s consumer price inflation slowed to 9.3 percent year-on-year in August 2017<\/p>\n<p>Chakwera said people do not need to be told that things in the country are getting better, but should feel it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say inflation is single digit, meaning things are getting better. Where are those things getting better?\u201d Chakwera queried.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking when he garnered support for the party\u2019s candidate in Lilongwe City South East Constituency, Ulemu Msungama, Chakwera said Malawians are suffering and they must rally behind a movement for a change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all need to be free. Every Malawian should be able to enjoy the country, not only those people in the ruling party,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chakwera then challenged that there would be no rigging for the area\u2019s Parliamentary seat as \u201chappened in 2014\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will not rig again. They tried it somewhere but they failed. These are the people who are in control,\u201d Chakwera said while pointing at MCP senior members who attended the rally.<\/p>\n<p>During the rally, Lilongwe City Deputy Mayor Juliana Kaduya, former Cabinet member in Bingu wa Mutharika regime Augustine Mtendere and United Democratic Front regional governor for the Centre John Banda joined MCP.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, during a rally at Mtsiliza Primary School ground in Lilongwe, where he was asking people to vote for Kinwell Zikaola, MCP\u2019s candidate in the forthcoming by-elections, Chakwera said electing leaders of integrity into public offices will be a significant step towards achieving development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime of not telling the truth is over. We must communicate to Malawians, knowing that they are fellow human beings who are able to decipher that we are telling the truth or not. Communicating truth will help because that is what will set us free,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chakwera said, when things are going on well in the country, it should not be leaders who should be saying that but rather people who are feeling the impact of such positive developments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of economics, in terms of development, in terms of relationships even with members of different parties and all leaders of various sectors, if we are determined to have integrity in public life and be able to tell the truth, and not tell lies, Malawi will develop because that will be a starting point of doing something right,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, has said single digit inflation which does not translate to socio-economic growth among the majority of Malawians is nothing but a fluke.
