{"id":53522,"date":"2017-09-15T08:39:40","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T06:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=53522"},"modified":"2017-09-15T08:39:41","modified_gmt":"2017-09-15T06:39:41","slug":"a-platform-for-dd-phiri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/09\/15\/a-platform-for-dd-phiri\/","title":{"rendered":"A platform for DD Phiri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>R<\/strong>enowned author and historian Desmond Dudwa Phiri, commonly known as DD Phiri, will be in the limelight tomorrow at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) and Maison de la France in Blantyre where his life and works are set to be celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>The legendary writer, now 86 years old, remains a regular contributor to the country\u2019s national newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>JCC and Maison dela France deputy director, Daisy Belfield, said yesterday that all was set for the celebration of the life and works of the great man, who has contributed a lot to the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a big day where we want to celebrate the life and works of DD Phiri. We are ready and we just want to call upon people to come and be part of this celebration,\u201d Belfield said.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, Belfield told <em>The Daily Times <\/em>that they were working with Anglia Bookstore and DD Phiri\u2019s granddaughter, Chimwemwe Phiri, to come up with a successful event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been busy running up and down to put things together but I can rightly say that everything is in order,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Belfield said DD Phiri\u2019s works have had an impact on the political, economic and literary landscape of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have a display of his publications and articles, accompanied by photographs and awards. We are actually honoured to be working with his family to celebrate his life and works,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jacaranda Foundation Executive Director and French Honorary Consul in Malawi, Luc Deschamps, said this was an event not to be missed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us all come to attend this exhibition [to pay] homage to a legendary writer, historian and columnist who has done so much for Malawi,\u201d Deschamps wrote on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>He said the veteran author will also speak, followed by a question and answer session.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, Dikamawoko Arts Troupe will pay tribute through a Ngoni dance.<\/p>\n<p>DD Phiri, who is also an economist and playwright, was born in Mzimba and is the proprietor of Aggrey Memorial School in Blantyre.<\/p>\n<p>He has published 17 books in the fields of history, sociology and economics and was recognised by the Pan-African Writers Association as one of the top 23 authors in Africa in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his works include <em>History of Malawi : From Earliest Times to the Year <\/em>1915 <em>\u2013 January <\/em>2004<em>, History of the Tumbuka People \u2013 <\/em>2000<em>, From Nguni to Ngoni : A History of the Ngoni Exodus from Zululand and Swaziland to Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia \u2013 <\/em>1982.<\/p>\n<p>During many of the events he has attended, DD Phiri has called on people in the country to love books, stressing that they were a source of knowledge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned author and historian Desmond Dudwa Phiri, commonly known as DD Phiri, will be in the limelight tomorrow at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) and Maison de la France in Blantyre where his life and works are set to be celebrated.
