{"id":53364,"date":"2017-09-12T10:48:56","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T08:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=53364"},"modified":"2017-09-12T10:48:57","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T08:48:57","slug":"aford-pushes-for-chihanas-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/09\/12\/aford-pushes-for-chihanas-recognition\/","title":{"rendered":"Aford pushes for Chihana\u2019s recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A<\/strong>lliance for Democracy (Aford) party members have asked Malawians to remember the party\u2019s founder, the late Chakufwa Thom Chihana, saying he was a genuine politician who fought for Malawi\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The members said government has in recent years failed to recognise Chihana as a national hero, citing politics of regionalism that has characterised the past and present regimes.<\/p>\n<p>Aford vice-president, Martha Chiumia, said the party will continue honouring Chihana to ensure his name remains in the history of the country\u2019s multiparty politics.<\/p>\n<p>She was speaking in Mzuzu on Saturday during a Chakufwa Chihana\u2019s fundraising dinner that was organised by Revamp Aford Movement.<\/p>\n<p>Chiumia said the country\u2019s political history will be incomplete minus Chihana\u2019s political achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome few people dreamt and spoke about multiparty in the country. Chihana did not just speak but acted on his words. He fought for it and now we are enjoying his fruits. Democracy started with Chihana. Therefore, we will continue celebrating his life,\u201d Chiumia said.<\/p>\n<p>Karonga Central Constituency Member of Parliament, Frank Mwenifumbo, echoed Chiumia\u2019s sentiments, adding Chihana was a clean politician who contributed a lot to the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>Mwenifumbo said it is high time Aford members opened the party\u2019s door to allow other people to join it, arguing politics is a game of numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have potential to do well in 2019 elections, only if we can work together and ask some people who dumped the party to rejoin us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAford had one voice in Parliament during late Chihana\u2019s leadership. We were able to sweep all parliamentary seats in the Northern Region and others in the Central Region.
