Uladi Mussa has been suspended as Peoples Party (PP) acting president, barely a day after he expressed interest in contesting as the party\u2019s presidential candidate in 2019 elections.<\/p>\n
PP\u2019s spokesperson Noah Chimpeni confirmed the development yesterday, citing the announcement Mussa made on Thursday as the reason for his suspension.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reason he has been suspended is because he went to the public to announce that he will contest as the party\u2019s torch bearer, apparently because Dr. Joyce Banda\u2019s term has expired. We do not condone this, however, he remains vice-president of the party,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In an interview, Mussa said since 2014 when the party\u2019s president, Joyce Banda, left the country, PP has been losing support.<\/p>\n
He said that is why, upon expiry of the term of office of the current National Executive Committee (Nec) on August 28, he has decided to contest for the party\u2019s presidency during the party\u2019s convention.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the past two years, I have been asking former state president, Dr. Joyce Banda, about the way forward for the party. We met in South Africa, I asked the same question. Having carefully analysed her responses and having done thorough research, I have concluded that since she is not interested in contesting in 2019 I should contest for the party\u2019s presidency so that I lead it in 2019 elections. I am asking all members to support me in strengthening PP,\u201d Mussa said.<\/p>\n
PP held its first convention in August 2012.<\/p>\n
