{"id":53088,"date":"2017-09-07T08:04:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T06:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=53088"},"modified":"2017-09-07T08:04:45","modified_gmt":"2017-09-07T06:04:45","slug":"malawi-has-2-nominees-in-afrima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/09\/07\/malawi-has-2-nominees-in-afrima\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi has 2 nominees in Afrima"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>T<\/strong>he country has two nominees in this year\u2019s All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) and these are Tay Grin and Dawson Kawerawera.<\/p>\n<p>Tay Grin is a nominee in the category of Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa for his song \u2018Tola\u2019 featuring Tanzania\u2019s Vanessa Mdee.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time for the artist to be nominated in the Afrima Awards.<\/p>\n<p>In the category, Tay Grin, who held a party last Friday at From Dusk Till Dawn in Blantyre to celebrate the nomination, is battling it out with, among others, South African artists Nasty C, Hugh Masekela, AKA and Emtee and Jah Prayzah from Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson, whose name might not ring a bell to many is in the category of Songwriter of the Year for the track \u2018If I\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other names in the category are those of Anselmoh Ralph, Karim Kharbouch, khalif Brown, Simi and Ogecha Diane Obande.<\/p>\n<p>This is also Dawson\u2019s first nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson said he was happy to have received a nomination in the Afrima Awards and that he did not expect it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe song which has got me the nomination is titled \u2018If I\u2019. I made a lyric video of it and my manager submitted the song to Afrima to be reviewed and it was nominated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dawson said he wrote the song for someone and that his incoming album, <em>Lilting Rhymes of Lilac, <\/em>will have it .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLilac is a flower used to represent love. Unlike the rose, which represents deep intense love, lilac represents na\u00efve love or puppy love. All the songs in the album are poems. They are 10 in total and the album is ready but yet to be released,\u201d Dawson said.<\/p>\n<p>The artist did graphic designing at Polytechnic Continuing Education Centre under the programme Desktop Publishing and Printing.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to pursue a degree in Land Economy graduating in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile in second year at The Polytechnic, I became interested in 3D animation and I started teaching myself how to do it going into third year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Midway through this year, Dawson was linked to Kelvin Sulugwe through Bright Chiligo and, together, they shot the first music video \u2018Galu Wadula Pa Chain\u2019 by Phat Lu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had previously made Excess\u2019 animated cartoon video for his song Mesho in 2015 and my own animated lyric video for my song \u2018If I\u2019, which got me the Afrima Award,\u201d Dawson said.<\/p>\n<p>He said, besides singing, he writes, sketches and also does poetry and dance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also love giving motivational speeches and career guidance talks in secondary schools and other places,\u201d Dawson said.<\/p>\n<p>The artist, who was born on November 1 1991, also said that he has been editing \u2018Ndili Phee\u2019 by Steve Spesho, whose video will be out soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The country has two nominees in this year\u2019s All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) and these are Tay Grin and Dawson Kawerawera.
