He is the second international act we have unveiled.

“The first was Thulasizwe but we have more so people should just watch the space. We just want to make sure that we have all the genres on the ground to appeal to everyone,” said Lucius popularly known as Soldier.

Lucius broke the news about Awilo during an event in Mangochi recently but it was unofficial and still in the pipeline. It is now a done deal.

Awilo is a Congolese musician who was a drummer in Viva la Musica, Stukas, Nouvelle Generation and Loketo.

In 1995, he finally quit drumming for singing and released his first album Moto Pamba with help from Shimita, Ballou Canta, Dindo Yogo, Dally Kimoko, Sam Mangwana, Syran Mbenza and Rigo Star.

His second CD, Coupe Bibamba (1998), made him known throughout Africa, Europe and America.

The artist’s versatility has been evident lately, with his many collaborations with modern day musicians in many African countries, among them West Africa’s P Square, Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade.

Sand Music Festival has been making strides as far as attracting international acts is concerned and last year they brought in Tanzania’s Diamond alongside Jamaica’s Turbulence.

But last year’s festival had more challenges which irked fans.

The festival however scored a mark in 2015 when they brought in Jamaica’s Busy Signal, who conquered with his performance.

Lucius said they have learnt lessons since they started and were hoping for nothing but the best this year, hence working very hard on the ground.

He also indicated that, having won the hearts of many companies and donors, they were seriously working on putting up proper offices for the festival.

With Lake of Stars Festival on break, people will this year only look foward to Blantyre Arts Festival happening early October and then Sand Music Festival October end.

After unveiling their first international act in South Africa’s Thulasizwe of the ‘Dali Wami’ fame, organisers of the Sand Music Festival have dropped another bombshell — announcing that Congolese musician Awilo Longomba will perform at the festival.
