AN award winning movie by filmmaker and actress Joyce Mhango Chavula, Lilongwe, <\/em>got a low patronage during its screening at M-Theatres in Blantyre on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Having won an award during the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs) last year, expectations were high that the film would pull a good audience but it did not.<\/p>\n

The title of the movie Lilongwe <\/em>is also the name of the country\u2019s capital city where the film was shot.<\/p>\n

It tells the story of a 13-year old girl who later grows into a beautiful young woman but still haunted by her past.<\/p>\n

The woman had three children from three different men.<\/p>\n

\u201cSociety says she is a prostitute but she believes she is doing her best to survive. Throughout the story, Lilongwe is saying, don\u2019t judge me, you don\u2019t know my story,\u201d said Mhango Chavula, who was not present during the screening.<\/p>\n

M-Theatres has come out to start screening local movies to give filmmakers a platform to showcase their works.<\/p>\n

The cinema will on September 30 hold what it dubs the Malawi Film Festival.<\/p>\n

M-Theatres proprietor, Sunduzwayo Jere, said they were doing their best to propel the film industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing our part but we cannot go forward if the filmmakers themselves are not active. They also have got to be on their toes to promote their work and that they need to be on the forefront,\u201d Jere said.<\/p>\n

He said he was happy with the progress they have made ahead of the film festival but called on people to patronise the screenings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese filmmakers need support and so when we put up these movies we expect them to patronise the screenings,\u201d Jere said.<\/p>\n

Other local movies that M-Theatres has screened include My Family from produced by Chambo the Great Movies.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the festival on September 30 will decorate the Best Feature Film, Best<\/p>\n

Short Film, Best Director,Best Actor and Best Actress.<\/p>\n
