THE Chewa King, Kalonga Gawa Undi, has called on Chewa chiefs and their subjects to ensure that children get education for personal and national development. Gawa Undi emphasised the need for girls to attend school.<\/p>\n
In a speech that was read out during the 2017 Kulamba ceremony at his Mkaika Headquarters in Zambia on Saturday, the Chewa king said without education, the future is doomed. \u201cYou need to ensure that all children get education.<\/p>\n
It is a very important tool for both personal and national development,\u201d Gawa Undi said. He also said the chiefs must ensure that cultural practices that are harmful in terms of spreading HIV are eradicated. \u201cLet us do away with such practices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Gawa Undi described Kulamba as a ceremony that continues to be a uniting factor among Chewas and people from other tribes. Zambia Vice President Inonge Wina said Kulamba is a greatest expression of cultural freedom for the people of Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.<\/p>\n
\u201cKulamba is a unity of purpose that transcends the national borders. Traditional ceremonies play a critical role in the preservation of cultural values.<\/p>\n
They are a unifying factor,\u201d Wina said. She said the theme for the ceremony \u2018Educating the Girl and Boy Child and End Child Marriages\u2019 resonates well with the Zambia\u2019s government of youth- focused development agenda.<\/p>\n
Malawi\u2019s Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development Cecelia Chazama said apart from helping people to understand their identity, traditional ceremonies such as Kulamba can help in boosting tourism revenue.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Malawi, there is peaceful coexistence between your people [Chewas] and other groups. This is evidenced by presence of different ethnic groups,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She was referring to the Lhomwe Paramount Chief Ngolongoliwa and Yao Paramount Chief Kawinga who were part of the Malawian delegation to the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Leader of Opposition Lazarus Chakwera and other Malawi Congress Party senior members and officials and Minister of Gender Jean Kalilani were also part of Malawi entourage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
