MZUZU City Council (MCC) is pushing blame on vendors for the dwindling standards of sanitation and hygiene within the city.<\/p>\n
MCC is accusing the traders of being irresponsible and failing to manage waste, as the council continues to invest in waste management.<\/p>\n
But vendors at Zigwagwa Market have hit back at the council, saying the current situation is, among other reasons, due to MCC\u2019s failure to provide adequate bins in all strategic places of the city\u2019s markets.<\/p>\n
Melvin Chirwa said the market has not enough waste bins to cater for the facility\u2019s population.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is poor sanitation in this market because there are only two waste bins which are used by hundreds of people using the market. Again, the bins are very far from our business areas which prompts us to dump the refuse anyhow as we cannot leave our businesses to throw the litter in fear of thieves,\u201d Chirwa said.<\/p>\n
MCC supervisor of workers at the market Thabu Wowa said the council has insufficient personnel to carry the refuse to designated areas. She said MCC has only one skip carrier which is not enough to satisfy the city\u2019s demand of waste management.<\/p>\n
But MCC Public Relations Officer Karen Msiska accused the vendors of failing to appreciate the council\u2019s efforts. \u201cBy the nature of the job for which they were employed, these people are adequate. But because someone is not able to do the right thing with the waste they generate, our sanitation rangers are overstretched and look few,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said those who litter around should be ashamed of themselves and urged those who generate wastes from restaurants to have their own bins in which they should be dumping their waste for easy collection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
