We say thumbs up to Cosoma for the award,” Masamba said.

She described the event as colourful and that the first of its kind and that it was well organised. Book Publishers Association of Malawi (Bpam) President, Alfred Msadala, described the event as memorable.

“I was particularly pleased with the programme of the gala dinner. It was professionally handled. The support that Cosoma receives from world bodies is testimony in itself. Wipo, Cisac, Aripo and, then, their partners Kopinor, who were very visible,” Msadala said.

As for the awards, the Bpam leader said they were on point and that from the achievements of 25 years, the track record was impressive.

On Dzuka, he said the citation proved that Dzuka has been at the development of publishing in Malawi since 1975.

“Dzuka has participated in textbook publishing ever since establishment. It has raised its managers to professionalism and entrepreneurism, as is the case with Dr James Ng’ombe and Egidio Mpanga— who have their own publishing houses,” he said.

Msadala said he was at pains to comment on the other awards but was impressed with those awarded posthumously. “They really considered the past 25 years. John Nyanga deserves it but the title stage performer is not encompassing. The guy was good even on air. But that is not a [big] deal at all. Some categories did not consider that and, for that reason, I do not know,” he said.

Dzuka received a trophy and a K200,000 cheque.

In a related development, Times Group Arts reporter Sam Banda Jnr scooped the Best Arts Journalist award through an initiation by Journalists Union of Malawi (Juma). Banda received a trophy and K200,000 cheque.

“I am excited to receive the award. I never saw it coming. I am happy that there are people out there who recognise my work. This is not for me alone but for all members of the Times Group team and the creative world,” he said.

The Cosoma 25th anniversary celebrations run under the theme ‘Celebrating the Past to Ignite the Future’.

DZUKA publishing company, a subsidiary of Times Group, on Friday scooped the Best Publisher award during the gala which was part of the Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) 25th anniversary celebrations held at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
