GOVERNMENT says journalists have a crucial role to play in the development of the country. Minister of Information Communication Technology, Nicholas Dausi, said this yesterday when he met members of the Blantyre Press Club in the city.<\/p>\n
He said the citizenry rely on journalists for information, therefore the need for them to be responsible.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs government, we appreciate the role that you reporters play in the development of country. Please continue with the good work. We would also like you to be responsible by promoting stories that will help build Malawi and not destroy it,\u201d Dausi said.<\/p>\n
He said government will endeavor to provide a conducive environment so that the media should operate freely. During the meeting, Dausi also briefed the media on developments in the Information Act, Access to Information Law as well as the Electronic Transaction law.<\/p>\n
Blantyre Press Club president Blessings Kanache, asked government to partner with journalists in the area of education by providing training platforms that would aid in their understanding of critical and topical issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cJournalists can only report effectively when they understand the issues. But for them to understand and appreciate the issues, training is very important,\u201d Kanache said.<\/p>\n
Misa Malawi Vice Chairperson Cliff Kawanga, hailed Dausi for making himself available to interact with the media. \u201cWe are glad that you made yourself available once again.<\/p>\n
This is a clear indication that you regard the media as a partner,\u201d he said. Kawanga also hailed Dausi for always being available when members of the media seek responses from government on various issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
