The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has condemned President Peter Mutharika\u2019s move of establishing a taskforce to look into the circumstances surrounding the distribution of contaminated water by Lilongwe Water Board to Area 18.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Mutharika appointed a task force which has been given 14 days to complete and submit a report on the matter to him.<\/p>\n
However, HRCC Executive Director, Robert Mkwezalamba, has said the move is unnecessary saying while the President is privileged to set up such structures, the task force will only drain government resources.<\/p>\n
According to Mkwezalamba, Mutharika could have summoned all players involved to submit their reports on what happened then act on the submissions as opposed to establishing a task force.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it is a fact that people were given contaminated water and we have multiple evidence, we believe subjecting Area 18 residents to another investigation is torture and humiliating after the trauma,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mkwezalamba has since appealed to Area 18 residents to disregard Mutharika\u2019s task force and proceed with their compensations claims.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appeal to Area 18 residents to disregard the taskforce. This is an attempt to derail the process and deny them the right to fair treatment for being exposed to unhealthy water given to them by the Lilongwe Water Board,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The task force comprises Chairperson who is the Chief Director in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Rexie Chiluzi, Director of Water in the Ministry of Agriculture, Modesta Kanjaye, Chief State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Pacharo Kayira, Director of Local Government Services, Sphiwe Mauwa, and Director of preventative Health Services in the Ministry of Health Storn Kabuluzi<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
