{"id":52040,"date":"2017-08-21T08:43:34","date_gmt":"2017-08-21T06:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=52040"},"modified":"2017-08-21T08:43:34","modified_gmt":"2017-08-21T06:43:34","slug":"cosoma-celebrations-start-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/08\/21\/cosoma-celebrations-start-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosoma celebrations start Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>C<\/strong>opyright Society of Malawi\u2019s (Cosoma) 25 years of existence celebrations will start today through to Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Cosoma Senior Licensing Officer Rosario Kamanga said the celebrations will run for the whole week with the climax on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is set. On Monday (today), we will launch a schoolbook project with other activities following up and then on Thursday, we will launch the integrated arts project with all the sub-projects and then awards on Friday,\u201d Kamanga said.<\/p>\n<p>The celebrations, according to Kamanga, will run under the theme \u2018celebrating the past to ignite the future\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have lots of activities lined up during the celebrations which include awarding outstanding users who pay for exploiting copyright protected works and creators that have stood the test of time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we indicated last week, the dates for the celebration are from August 21 to August 25. We will also officially launch the Arts Production and Marketing Cooperative store and online app for selling artistic works including music and movies,\u201d Kamanga added.<\/p>\n<p>Cosoma through funding from government is implementing the Integrated Arts Development Project.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s business executive Isaac Chingota revealed recently that they have started CD production and that they have established an online store where artists can be selling pictures, games, apps and books among others.<\/p>\n<p>Cosoma was established in 1992 under Section 41 of the Copyright Act of 1989.<\/p>\n<p>The body\u2019s main function is to promote and protect creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Cosoma, which recently distributed ringtone royalties channelled by Airtel Malawi, has been under heavy criticism from some artists for lack of cutting edge to minimise piracy which has seen many artists opting for holding frequent live performances.<\/p>\n<p>With technological advancements, piracy has been rampant in the country resulting in musicians failing to reap from their sweat.<\/p>\n<p>The body, however, has in many cases defended itself saying it was making progress on the move through its anti-piracy campaigns among others.<\/p>\n<p>The new Copyright Act has also brought in smiles as it has enhanced penalty provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The old Copyright Act had smaller fines.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament passed the Copyright Bill in July 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Copyright Society of Malawi\u2019s (Cosoma) 25 years of existence celebrations will start today through to Friday.
