The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) on Wednesday launched by-elections in three constituencies and three council wards without chief elections officer (CEO).<\/p>\n
The last person to hold the position, in an acting capacity, was Thandie Nkovole, who died in June.<\/p>\n
Nkovole acted on the position after the firing of Willie Kalonga over financial mismanagement issues.<\/p>\n
Among other key duties, the electoral body\u2019s CEO is responsible for advising the commission on policy matters and implementing them.<\/p>\n
The position holder is also supposed to plan, organise and supervise electoral activities apart from liaising with stakeholders on electoral matters within and outside the country.<\/p>\n
Other equally important duties that the CEO performs include ensuring that suitable training and development are provided for staff to enhance their contr ibution to the commission.<\/p>\n
But Mec Chairperson, Jane Ansah, said the absence of the CEO has not compromised the performance of the commission as the present deputy chief elections officer has vast experience in electoral issues.<\/p>\n
Ansah was referring to Deputy CEO Responsible for Operations, Harris Potani.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, we haven\u2019t had chief elections officer for some time but we have the deputy chief elections officer who has been there for a long time and he is the one acting as the chief elections officer and everything is going smoothly, \u201dAnsah said.<\/p>\n
Malawi Electoral Support Network Chairperson, Steve Duwa, also said as long as the deputy chief elections officer is doing what the senior could do, there is no problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
