President Peter Mutharika has challenged two newly sworn-in High Court judges to earn the confidence of the public through impartiality and reduction of delays in justice delivery.<\/p>\n
Mutharika made the remarks yesterday at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre where Jack N\u2019riva and Thomson Ligowe were sworn in.<\/p>\n
He said he believes the judges have the credentials to execute justice impartially and timely.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this respect, I must hasten to add that one of the major complaints by people against the judiciary is the prolonged delays in delivery of judgments. Unless you and those already on the bench improve in this area, you shall be guilty of denying the people of this country the justice which they yearn to have,\u201d Mutharika said.<\/p>\n
He further called on the newly sworn-in judges to be accountable to the people of Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cPublic office calls for accountability. And occupying judicial office is not an except ion. The measure of your accountability will be the speed in the delivery of your rulings, orders and judgments. So, when people call on you to be accountable, it is by no means an attack on the judicial independence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice, Andrew Nyirenda, described the appointment of the new judges as progressive, arguing the judicial system needs more personnel to ensure efficiency.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a positive development. As you are aware, we have had consecutive losses in the judicial system. We need more and more of people of this calibre. For instance, in Mzuzu, we only have one High Court Judge, most likely one of the two who have been sworn in today should be prepared to help us in Mzuzu,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In his remarks, Ligowe promised to ensure that justice prevails.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe President is right, justice delayed is justice denied. I will make sure I deliver accordingly as the law requires and also serve Malawians to the best of my abilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
