{"id":51803,"date":"2017-08-15T13:00:50","date_gmt":"2017-08-15T11:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=51803"},"modified":"2017-08-15T13:00:51","modified_gmt":"2017-08-15T11:00:51","slug":"felix-jumbe-embroiled-in-assault-allegation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/08\/15\/felix-jumbe-embroiled-in-assault-allegation\/","title":{"rendered":"Felix Jumbe embroiled in assault allegation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>B<\/strong>usiness person and Salima Central Member of Parliament Felix Jumbe is involved in a disagreement with an agro-dealer Frank Chiwanda over a maize seed deal worth about K14 million.<\/p>\n<p>Chiwanda claims that in the course of their disagreement, on July 28 2017, Jumbe and some of his workers assaulted him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was jogging in Area 25 and some people, who I know work for Honourable Jumbe, pushed me into a vehicle and took me to Peacock Seeds offices. When we reached the offices, Jumbe and the people who took me from Area 25 started beating me [up],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chiwanda, who trades as Mai Nini Agro-dealers, said last year he took about 11 tonnes of maize seed, worth about K14 million from Jumbe\u2019s company, Peacock Seeds.<\/p>\n<p>It has, however, transpired that he only paid back about K7 million to Jumbe and the legislator has in recent weeks been demanding the remaining K7 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am an agro-dealer but in this business, there are times when people default payment. There are always ways of paying back. If it failed last season, the seed may be sold during the next planting season. All is not lost. When I was taken to Peacock Seeds office, they assaulted me,\u201d Chiwanda said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was ready to give Jumbe the seed in his custody on the condition that Jumbe pays him about K750,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the planting season ended, I have been fumigating the seeds. I need to be given money for that. The other money will be used for transport from Chitipa to Lilongwe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On July 29 2017, Chiwanda went to Kanengo Police to report the matter, from where he was given a letter to assist him in getting medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, however, just states that \u201che has been assaulted by unknown persons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Another document from Kamuzu Central Hospital, dated August 1 2017, shows that Chiwanda had \u201ctender left side of the chest, X-ray shows multiple rib fracture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer Salome Chibwana said no formal complaint was made on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person just got a letter he used to seek medical attention. We have checked our records, there is no formal complaint on the matter,\u201d Chibwana said.<\/p>\n<p>While confirming that Chiwanda owes him K7 million, Jumbe refused to comment on assault allegations, saying he has engaged Maulidi and Company to assist him in debt collection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business person and Salima Central Member of Parliament Felix Jumbe is involved in a disagreement with an agro-dealer Frank Chiwanda over a maize seed deal worth about K14 million.
