People of the Maseko Ngoni ethnic grouping will from September 1 to 2 hold their annual Umhlangano celebrations at Nkolimbo Village, Traditional Authority Kwataine, near Ntcheu Boma.<\/p>\n
Speaking during a press conference on Friday in Blantyre, Chairperson of the event\u2019s organising committee, Inkosi Makwangwala, Senior Chief, said this year \u2019s Umhlangano wa Maseko would be unique as, for the first time, they will publicly showcase an initiation ceremony for Ngoni girls.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you are aware, the prime aim of the cultural festival is to commemorate and showcase our tradition and culture, this time around, we decided to include the initiation ceremony so that people know how things happen according to our tradition,\u201d said Makwangwala, adding that the committee had also sent an official invitation to President Peter Mutharika to grace the occasion.<\/p>\n
He said the cultural event, the fifth Umhlangano wa Maseko, would start on Friday with traditional dances with the crescendo of the event on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cEarly in the morning, around 3am on Saturday, we will have a special event as we always do, remembering the spirits of our ancestors at the grave of our patriarch, Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani Chikuse. We are going to pray to our ancestors for our ethnic grouping\u2019s success and indeed the country\u2019s success,\u201d Makwangwala said.<\/p>\n
He said, in the afternoon, people will converge for the main event, where the guest of honour will be present and their King, Ngwenyama Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani V, will also address the multitude that will gather.<\/p>\n
Initiated by the reigning Gomani, the Umhlangano wa Maseko pools Ngonis and even people of other ethnic groupings in Malawi, Mozambique and other countries to sample the culture of the ethnic grouping as well as bind them together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
