The soccer fraternity is fed up with the government\u2019s assurances on the Kamuzu Stadium renovations.
\nThe stadium, which was once Malawi\u2019s football Mecca, is in dilapidated state. It has been condemned by the country\u2019s football governing body, Football Association of Malawi (Fam), that it is unplayable.
\nThe decision has resulted into games being played at community stadia in Mulanje, Balaka and Zomba.
\nTeams have been posting financial losses due to poor gate revenue collections because these stadia cannot accommodate a lot of people.
\nWe are repeatedly being told that the government wants to remove the dilapidated turf and replace it with a new one so that teams can start using the stadium. Apart from that, the sewer system at Kamuzu Stadium is in dilapidated state.
\nThe story of renovating the stadium started with former sports Minister, Henry Mussa, who assured the nation that he had secured funds for the project. The nation has therefore, been waiting with abated breath on when the promise would be fulfilled.
\nThis week, some sources confided in our sister paper The Daily Times, that $200,000 have been paid to a Zimbabwean contractor for the installation of a new artificial turf.
\nIt is sad that Malawians have a tendency of being reactive to situations instead of being proactive.
\nThe government, who are owners of the facility, knew the life span of that artificial turf but decided to remain dormant until the situation became desperate.
\nThe reality, as much as it hurts, is that we have civil servants who cannot plan and you cannot expect to progress with such bad or sloppy administration.
\nOnly a fool can draw blinkers and try to shield his eyes from the reality that we are being led by hopeless administrators who believe in boring government bureaucracy.
\nWhy should they be in a panic mode now when they had all the time to properly plan for these projects. After all, Kamuzu Stadium is government property and they make money out of it and that money needs to bankroll this project.
\nI hope those hopeless administrators at Capital Hill, who I believe are reading me in copy, will in future desist from this sickening habit of not maintaining the infrastructure we have.
\nWe seem to have forgotten that it is the same people who have destroyed Lilongwe Institute for Sports, Kamuzu Institute for Sports, Blantyre Youth Centre, just to mention a few\u2014sport infrastructures they have sent to the gallows.
