{"id":50873,"date":"2017-07-25T11:24:30","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T09:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=50873"},"modified":"2017-07-25T11:24:32","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T09:24:32","slug":"shepherd-bushiri-spars-with-paramount-chief-lundu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/07\/25\/shepherd-bushiri-spars-with-paramount-chief-lundu\/","title":{"rendered":"Shepherd Bushiri spars with Paramount Chief Lundu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa-based Malawian evangelist, Shepherd Bushiri, of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) has trashed remarks made by Paramount Chief Lundu, that his church is promoting acts of \u201cSatanism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Lundu, who made the remarks on Saturday in Nchalo during a political rally held by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), also said he does not want the church in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.<\/p>\n<p>Lundu told the rally that Bushiri pretends to be a good Samaritan by distributing maize while advancing his political ambitions. He declared that he would not allow the evangelist to build his church in the Lower Shire claiming that the earmarked site was already designated for a government hospital.<\/p>\n<p>But in a statement from ECG issued yesterday, signed by its Communications Director, Ephraim Nyondo, Lundu alleged that Bushiri has political ambitions, a remark ECG has described as character assassination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophet [Bushiri] has learnt that Chief Lundu gave two reasons for his decision. One, because he thinks ECG is promoting Satanism in his area and two, because Prophet Bushiri has political ambitions. As a church, we are very surprised with Chief Lundu\u2019s remarks because we have always viewed him as a sane leader who is well versed with the freedom of worship which is well provided [for] in the Constitution of Malawi,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n<p>ECG further said Lundu should sober up and return to his normalcy so that he appreciates the gravity of his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreatening to ban our church which is operating legally is something every Malawian should be worried about because it shows we have certain individuals who think they are above the Constitution. We, therefore, make it clear to Lundu, and everybody who shares his thinking that Malawi, including the area he operates [in], is a republic [and] not a kingdom,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n<p>When contacted yesterday, Lundu said he did not want to talk to the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to speak to any journalist today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement, ECG further calls on Malawians to speak out against any elements in the country who think they are above the laws of the country, arguing Malawians have the duty to safeguard democracy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa-based Malawian evangelist, Shepherd Bushiri, of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) has trashed remarks made by Paramount Chief Lundu, that his church is promoting acts of \u201cSatanism\u201d.
