{"id":50791,"date":"2017-07-24T10:50:33","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T08:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=50791"},"modified":"2017-07-24T10:50:36","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T08:50:36","slug":"parliament-to-summon-lilongwe-water-board-over-contaminated-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/07\/24\/parliament-to-summon-lilongwe-water-board-over-contaminated-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliament to summon Lilongwe Water Board over contaminated water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources has said it will soon summon Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) officials to explain to Parliament circumstances that led to the board distributing water contaminated with sewage to residents of Area 18 in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources Chairperson, Werani Chirenga, said in an interview that the committee would, among other things, ask LWB to compensate people affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very concerned that our colleagues were drinking sewage. It is a very unfortunate incident and we are going to summon Lilongwe Water Board to appear before our committee to apologise to the nation and then compensate the people who have been affected,\u201d Chirenga said.<\/p>\n<p>Chirenga added that, if nothing is done on the matter, LWB may continue giving customers contaminated water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do not do anything, we will find that everyone in this country is drinking sewage,\u201d Chirenga said.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, residents of Area 18 in Lilongwe were given contaminated water following a sewer system leakage that contaminated the board\u2019s supply pipe.<\/p>\n<p>On July 18, 2017, LWB released a press statement apologising to its customers, saying the affected water had been disinfected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources has said it will soon summon Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) officials to explain to Parliament circumstances that led to the board distributing water contaminated with sewage to residents of Area 18 in Lilongwe.
