One of the country\u2019s versatile female poets, Mlakatuli Nankhoma, is dead.<\/p>\n
Mlakatuli Nankhoma, real name Chrissy Mkwate, died in the early hours of Sunday at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) said on Sunday that they were saddened by Nankhoma\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
\u201cMlakatuli Nankhoma was in the category of poets who started longtime ago and was consistent in her writing and delivery. As Pam, we are shocked and saddened by her death,\u201d said Pam president Nyamalikiti Nthiwatiwa.<\/p>\n
The Pam leader further said Mlakatuli Nankhoma was one of the poets who produced high quality poems.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not just saying this because she is dead but those who have followed poetry in the country will agree with me she was a top quality poet. As Pam, we are battling to have female poets and to lose her is taking us back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nyamalikiti also revealed that they were set to embark on a mentorship programme to beef up the numbers of female poets.<\/p>\n
\u201cMlakatuli Nankhoma was among those we wanted to utilise to mentor the upcoming female poets. We have lost a talented poet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to former Pam publicity secretary Sylvester Kalizang\u2019oma, Mlakatuli Nankhoma will be laid to rest tomorrow at Lipoche Village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba.<\/p>\n
\u201cMlakatuli Nankhoma\u2019s death is a blow to the poetry fraternity and the creative industry. She was very passionate about poetry,\u201d Kalizang\u2019oma said.<\/p>\n
Mlakatuli Nankhoma, who until her death was a teacher at Namasimba Primary School in Nacholi, Blantyre, was born on August 11, 1970.<\/p>\n
The veteran poet started poetry whilst she was at Masongola Secondary School in Zomba.<\/p>\n
Some of the poems she stitched include \u2018Utchisi\u2019, \u2018Kutchena Kosekuja\u2019, \u2018Bombasa Ndameneyu?\u2019 \u2018Opatsana Pogonana\u2019, and \u2018Mmemo Weniweni\u2019.<\/p>\n
She is survived by a husband and four children.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, University of Malawi\u2019s\u2014Chancellor College music lecturer, Mildred Alinane Mphande, who died on Friday afternoon at Zomba Hospital, will be laid to rest tomorrow at HHI in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
Mphande died at Zomba Hospital due to maternal complications.<\/p>\n
Her death has shocked many people in the academia and the creative industry where she played a bigger role in developing different projects.<\/p>\n
Musician Lucius Banda said on social media that he was saddened by Mphande\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am shocked with her death. She was talented and she backed me in a number of my songs in the previous albums,\u201d Lucius said.<\/p>\n
Musician Malala described Mphande as someone who was passionate about music and that she was always there to assist whenever needed.<\/p>\n
Apart from playing a role of judge in the E-Wallet competition, Mphande also helped in projects such as Girl Effect and Zathu Pa Wailesi.<\/p>\n
Mphande who was a Seventh-day Adventist faithful used to perform with a group known as Harmony. She led in the song \u2018Chipata\u2019.<\/p>\n
