{"id":50289,"date":"2017-07-14T10:45:18","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T08:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=50289"},"modified":"2017-07-14T10:45:22","modified_gmt":"2017-07-14T08:45:22","slug":"balaka-hospital-destroys-k118-million-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/07\/14\/balaka-hospital-destroys-k118-million-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Balaka Hospital destroys K118 million drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Balaka District Hospital on Monday burnt expired drugs worth K118 million which it purchased from the Central Medical Stores Trust.<\/p>\n<p>The disposal, which took place at Sosola Dumping Site was witnessed by officials from the district hospital, district council, treasury, police and Department of Environmental Affairs, among others.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, spokesperson for the hospital, Mercy Nyirenda, said it was ideal to burn the drugs because they were deemed unfit for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the drugs that we are burning today date back to 2012. Initially, it is the Treasury Department that gives the mandate to destroy expired drugs and the delay was because Treasury took long to respond, hence the drugs kept on accumulating,\u201d Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n<p>She said, apart from the drug s , the burnt consignment also included HIV Testing and Counselling its.<\/p>\n<p>She said most of the drugs were donations from different development partners. She said the drugs sometimes came in large quantities but only had a few months to expire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not saying donations are bad, but most of the drugs that we receive are in large quantities and also they come when they are few months from their expiry dates.
