{"id":49928,"date":"2017-07-09T09:41:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-09T07:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=49928"},"modified":"2017-07-09T09:41:58","modified_gmt":"2017-07-09T07:41:58","slug":"musowa-fisher-conquer-mulanje-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/07\/09\/musowa-fisher-conquer-mulanje-mountain\/","title":{"rendered":"Musowa, Fisher conquer Mulanje Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHARLES Musowa and Doris Fisher rose to the occasion to triumph in the 2017 Mount Mulanje Porters\u2019 Race at Likhubula Forestry Office in Mulanje District yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The result was especially remarkable for Fisher who won gold in the ladies\u2019 category for the fourth consecutive year having conquered the 23 km distance in 2:47:13. She was trailed by Pilirani William who hit the finishing line 11 minutes later, with Violet Joza coming third in 3:02:14.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s category, Musowa was first to the finishing line in 2:08:36 while Evance Nyazule came second after clocking 2:12:06. Boniface Pangani settled for bronze with a third place finish in 2:12:33.<\/p>\n<p>Musowa said he was excited to have taken over the crown from last year\u2019s winner, Leo Chikhwaza, and described the race as tough because of the weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually run in chilly weather but today we had a sunny day. This made life tough for us as it was a bit hotter,\u201d Musowa said.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher was left scratching her head after failing to equal the record she set last year by 7 minutes but promised to do much better next year. TNM joined the list of companies and organisations that bankrolled the event, and the mobile phone service provider\u2019s Senior Manager (Business Services), Limbani Nsapato, could not hide his excitement with what was on offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came in to support the competition with K5 million and it has been worth it. As a Malawian company, we wanted to play a part in conserving natural resources on Mulanje Mountain through coming to this year\u2019s Mount Mulanje Porters Race,\u201d Nsapato said.<\/p>\n<p>Guest of honour, Ministry of Tourism\u2019s Director of Tourism, Isaac Katopola, congratulated the participants and organizers for keeping the event alive for more than 20 years and said government values its contribution to the development of tourism in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust have been in the forefront of organizing the annual event, with other organisations like Malawi Gaming Board, Catering Solutions and Mbaula Network also supporting this year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHARLES Musowa and Doris Fisher rose to the occasion to triumph in the 2017 Mount Mulanje Porters\u2019 Race at Likhubula Forestry Office in Mulanje District yesterday.
