New kid on the boxing block, Dennis Mwale Junior, has\u2014after, on his debut, defeating Mac Matheso at Kempton Park Civic Hall in South Africa on Saturday\u2014 promised to emulate compatriot, Isaac \u2018Golden Boy\u2019 Chilemba.<\/p>\n
The Malawian sent his South African opponent to the canvas in the first round and dominated the six-round non-title lightweight contest.<\/p>\n
The boxer from Lilongwe relocated to Johannesburg in 2014 and linked up with Chilemba, who moved to South Africa in 2003.<\/p>\n
Like Chilemba, who left Blantyre as an amateur, Mwale has just turned professional after receiving his licence from Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB).<\/p>\n
Chilemba\u2019s Manager, Jodi Solomon, is also managing Mwale.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Chilemba has raised the bar for others. I am happy that I am training with the best alongside Chilemba. This is giving me hope that one day I will be the best. I only need to follow the advice of my manager [Solomon] and Chilemba to make it big,\u201d he said in a brief interview.<\/p>\n
Mwale, 26, hails from Ntchindi Village in Mzimba but he grew up in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
He was offered a job as gym assistant at a gym which Solomon owns.<\/p>\n
He then started boxing training in his spare time before Chilemba offered him some lessons.<\/p>\n
\u201cBasically, I work as a gym assistant during the day then I train in the evening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
MPBCB President, Lonzoe \u2018Defector\u2019 Zimba, who watched the fight alongside the board\u2019s spokesperson Frank Chibisa, said Mwale\u2019s talent was raw and needs nurturing.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is young and lion-hearted. He is under good management and we believe that with systematic grooming, he will be a great boxer for Malawi. We had to issue a clearance quickly when Chilemba recommended his name.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis technique is quite okay. He knows how to duck. He can get better if he improves on his combinations and uppercuts,\u201d Zimba said.<\/p>\n
