OME Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Grace Chiumia, has said that partisan politics has resulted in ethnic and religious divisions which have eroded gains registered through independence.<\/p>\n
Speaking when she represented President Peter Mutharika during this year\u2019s independence celebrations in Mzuzu, Chiumia challenged Malawians to ignore their differences and embrace peace and unity in honour of those who fought for the country\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n
\u201cPoliticians are dividing us, Malawians, resulting in retrogression. Let us unite as one nation. Let us learn to respect our leaders and ensure that we are appreciative of the development they bring,\u201d Chiumia said.<\/p>\n
She alluded to hateful remarks by politicians that put locals against the government of the day that in some cases result in acrimony among Malawians.<\/p>\n
\u201cMalawians want politics of development not those that divide them. Our priority should be peace and stability because, without them, there will not be development in our country. Malawians should learn to invest in hard work if we are to develop,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mzuzu City Member of Parliament, Leonard Njikho, said unity of purpose is important to a nation that needs to wage war against backwardness, illiteracy and poverty.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to rally behind goals of fighting poverty and to progress towards economic development targets. Unity of purpose can lead to certain achievements in social, economic and political spheres,\u201d Njikho said.<\/p>\n
Church leaders, including CCAP Synod of Livingstonia\u2019s Moderator, Reverend Douglas Chipofya, prayed for unity among Malawians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
