Management of Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe got a rude awakening on Monday when the Lilongwe Water Board disconnected water at the giant facility due to an outstanding bill estimated at K69 million.<\/p>\n
This could be bad news for the facility as it is expected to host Independence Day Celebrations Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sources close to the stadium confirmed on Monday that the bill dates back to last year when the facility was under construction.<\/p>\n
BNS Operations Manager, Eric Ning\u2019ang\u2019a, confirmed the development on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been paying water bills to Lilongwe Water Board but we are surprised by their action. This is a government facility and we will be hosting a big event in two days\u2019 time, so we are shocked,\u201d Ning\u2019ang\u2019a said.<\/p>\n
Ning\u2019ang\u2019a said the facility paid K13 million last week as part of the bill.<\/p>\n
However, the board\u2019s acting spokesperson, Trevor Phoya, on Monday said the board was carrying out a routine disconnection exercise in the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am yet to receive a report from our people on the ground,\u201d Phoya said.<\/p>\n
Officials from the stadium and the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development were on Monday discussing with the water board to settle the bill before the July 6 event, which President Peter Mutharika will grace.<\/p>\n
Recently, electricity was also disconnected at the facility on the eve of a game between Malawi national football team and Comoros islands.<\/p>\n
But management of the stadium moved quickly to have power restored a day before the game.<\/p>\n
