Government has said it cannot disclose the budget for Independence Day celebrations, saying the actual amounts will be made public after the event.<\/p>\n
While stressing that they have what he described as a modest budget for the celebrations, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Joseph Mwanamvekha, would not provide more details.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot tell you the tentative budget because once figures change, you will be on us. We want to give you the actual budget after the celebrations. But we would like to ensure the general public that the budget is modest.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are also some members of the private sector who have pledged to support some aspects of the budget, but they don\u2019t want to be named,\u201d Mwanamvekha said.<\/p>\n
He was speaking at a press conference in Lilongwe on Monday.<\/p>\n
The committee also has Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Nicholas Dausi and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Aggrey Massi.<\/p>\n
The Trade, Industry and Tourism Minister said the main event will be prayers to be conducted at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the morning and later a football match between Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets.<\/p>\n
The committee has also said before Mutharika\u2019s address during the prayers, he will decorate Colin Cameron, one of the ministers in Malawi\u2019s first cabinet.<\/p>\n
Mwanamvekha said prayers, to be conducted under the theme, \u2018Thanking God for a season of plenty\u2019, will be preceded by other activities in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu.<\/p>\n
According to Mwanamvekha, on Wednesday, in Blantyre, there will be a parade by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) from Independence Arch to Shoprite. Later, there will be free family music show by Mibawa and Mizu Band at Independence Arch up to midnight.<\/p>\n
The organising committee also says in Lilongwe the MDF officers will have a parade from Crossroads Roundabout to Memorial Tower, and later in the evening there will be free music show at the Memorial Tower by Black Missionaries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
