Blantyre City Council (BCC) Monday launched a Blantyre Health Week aimed to improve sanitation in the city.<\/p>\n
During the week, residents will be cleaning their residential and business premises together with city officials and their ward councillors.<\/p>\n
Mayor Wild Ndipo said the week is aimed at instilling a sense of ownership of the city among its residents.<\/p>\n
He expressed hope that the week will result in change of people\u2019s mindset to embrace a culture of keeping their surroundings clean all the time.<\/p>\n
He said keeping the city clean requires concerted effort among all the stakeholders.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe work of keeping the city clean is not for the council only. There is need for concerted efforts to make it clean and green. I should thank the business community, civil society organisations, schools and other stakeholders for their support towards the campaign,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, hailed Blantyre City Council for bringing up the initiative, saying it will result in healthy lives among the residents of the city.<\/p>\n
Nankhumwa said his ministry is aware that the council is facing numerous challenges in its work, including inadequate resources, lack of technologies and facilities for waste collection and management and illegal settlements, among others.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody wants to be in a dirty place. I hope that the Blantyre Health Week will improve sanitation in the city and I should ask the Principal Secretary of Local Government to take the initiative to other councils in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Blantyre Health Week is being observed under the theme \u2018Keep Blantyre City Clean\u2019.<\/p>\n
After the week, Blantyre City Council will run a \u2018Clean Premises Competition\u2019 where the council will be awarding the most clean business and residential premises.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
