Ailing former Civil Service United and Flames forward, Noel \u201cAmfumu\u201d Mkandawire, says his condition is worsening with each passing day and has asked for more support from well-wishers.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old has been bed-ridden for nearly three months now as he battles a liver ailment.<\/p>\n
The problem has caused his stomach and legs to swell and he can hardly walk without support.<\/p>\n
Some well-wishers have been coming forward to cheer the former soccer star who is currently admitted to Mzimba District Hospital.<\/p>\n
Last week, former Flames legend and Coach Kinnah Phiri, paid Mkandawire a visit at the hospital.<\/p>\n
In an interview on Monday, Mkandawire, who was at one time the backbone of the Malawi National Football Team, said his condition is not improving.<\/p>\n
He said his wish is to get financial assistance to enable him, fly him abroad for better treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing has changed for me this far. The situation is going from bad to worse. If, by any chance, I can be assisted financially\u2026 going abroad for treatment will be very ideal,\u201d Mkandawire said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) mobilised over K100, 000 to assist the former Escom United star.<\/p>\n
NRFA General Secretary, Masiya Nyasulu, said though he has not had a chance to meet the player, reports indicate that Mkandawire\u2019s condition does not look good.<\/p>\n
\u201cI delegated my deputy to go on my behalf to deliver our contribution to Mkandawire. But I am told he is not well and he badly needs support. He was what the country needed during his playing career. This is the right time for the whole nation to show him love and support as a token of appreciation for his contribution to football,\u201d Nyasulu said.<\/p>\n
Nyasulu\u2019s sentiments were shared by a Mzuzu-based soccer analyst, Eston Kadenge-Mwafulirwa, who personally visited Mkandawire recently.<\/p>\n
\u201cNoel is in great pain. The question is: what are we doing to share his pain? Has the soccer fraternity forgotten him just because he can no longer play?<\/p>\n
\u201cLet us not forget that he was one of the Flames\u2019 most dependable players. This is my plea to all stakeholders to come forward and help him,\u201d Mwafulirwa said.<\/p>\n
Mzimba District Heath Officer, Lumbani Munthali, confirmed about Mkandawire\u2019s admission, but declined to comment further on ethical grounds.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Chayamba Secondary School Alumni Association (CSSAA) visited Mkandawire at the hospital to cheer him up.<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of the association, Margaret Chiwinga Mkandawire, said Mkandawire (Noel) deserved the group\u2019s help as an alumni of the school.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was at Chayamba in Kasungu between 1997 and 2000. We were deeply touched to hear about his illness. That is why we decided to mobilise resources and make this donation,\u201d Mkandawire said.<\/p>\n
The group then handed over more than K150, 000 and some groceries to the former footballer.<\/p>\n
