Former Roads Authority boss, Trevor Hiwa, Wednesday pleaded not guilty to all three charges he has been charged in connection with allegations of corruptly awarding a contract to his family business but managed to secure bail within minutes.<\/p>\n
Chief Resident Magistrate, Violet Chipawo, ordered Hiwa to pay K400,000 cash and two sureties, who included his wife, Gertrude Hiwa, the Law Commissioner to be bonded with K500,000.<\/p>\n
This was after Chipawo formally charged him with abuse of office after he allegedly recommended the award of a contract to Infracon Limited which was Hiwa\u2019s company for the World Bank-funded $303, 833 contract for the design and supervision of various roads to be constructed in Central and Southern regions without the approval of internal procurement committee.<\/p>\n
He was also charged for his failure to declare interest, as a public officer, that Infracon was his family business.<\/p>\n
He pleaded not guilty to all the three charges and immediately his lawyer, Gift Nankhuni, asked the court to grant Hiwa a court bail, saying he has a permanent home in the Capital City\u2019s low residential area in Area 10.<\/p>\n
Nankhuni also said Hiwa had left the Roads Authority, therefore, he would not be able to interfere with the graft-busting body, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigations.<\/p>\n
ACB Senior Prosecutions Officer, Imran Saidi, did not object to the bail application.<\/p>\n
However, he asked for an adjournment, saying the ACB wants to get consent for prosecution from the Director of Public Prosecutions first before commencement of the case.<\/p>\n
Nankhuni and Saidi, therefore, agreed with the court to reconvene on July 18, 2017 for the commencement of the case.<\/p>\n
Hiwa, however, did not sit with his fellow inmates at the court, he freely mingled with his family members and friends and sat in the public gallery just before the case started.<\/p>\n
Donning a white shirt, dark suit and a sweater, Hiwa happily chatted with his wife, relatives and friends after spending a night at an undisclosed police station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
