{"id":48835,"date":"2017-06-21T09:11:38","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T07:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=48835"},"modified":"2017-06-21T09:11:39","modified_gmt":"2017-06-21T07:11:39","slug":"never-stop-reading-dd-phiri-tells-hhi-pupils","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/06\/21\/never-stop-reading-dd-phiri-tells-hhi-pupils\/","title":{"rendered":"Never stop reading, DD Phiri tells HHI pupils"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned historian and author Desmond Dudwa Phiri, better known as DD Phiri, yesterday called on Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) Primary School pupils to befriend books and that they should never stop reading if they want to gain knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Phiri said this during the opening of Mr Luc\u2019s Library at HHI Primary School whose champion is Jacaranda School for Orphans Executive Director Luc Deschamps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am excited that Mr Luc\u2019s Library has opened at HHI Primary School and I would like to thank Luc Deschamps for this project. Libraries are a foundation of knowledge and I urge you children to utilise the library, read books and never stop reading,\u201d Phiri said.<\/p>\n<p>Describing himself as a bookworm, the veteran author said books will always stand out when it comes to gaining knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake advantage of this library; don\u2019t be shy to visit it. It is a source of knowledge and in books you get entertained but also at the same time it is a source of recreation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>DD Phiri, who has published 17 books in the fields of history, sociology and economics and was recognised by Pan-African Writers\u2019 Association (Pawa) as one of the top 23 authors in Africa in 2011, also took time out to tell the pupils of the story of some of the great inventors.<\/p>\n<p>He said some of the great inventors never attained formal education but gained knowledge from reading books.<\/p>\n<p>Book Publishers Association of Malawi president Alfred Msadala, who is also a renowned author, said a book was priceless and that children should not leave it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me books are in my blood. I am happy that Mr Luc\u2019s Library has opened at HHI Primary School. Take care of it, utilise it and read the books,\u201d Msadala said, who also recited a poem.<\/p>\n<p>Deschamps said he was thrilled with the opening of Mr Luc\u2019s Library at HHI Primary School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our sixth library in Blantyre. We have already opened the Chigumula Primary School Library, Misesa School Library and now HHI. And we also have three public libraries, one in Chemboma Village in Chigumula, one at Trade Fair Grounds and another at Jacaranda Cultural Centre,\u201d Deschamps said.<\/p>\n<p>He said books were very important for children and called upon pupils to take time and read in the library to gain knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Deschamps hailed different organisations for the support to the library, among them National Library Service and Stephenson Pope Babcock Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The opening attended by, among others, Member of Parliament Aaron Sangala was spiced up with several performances including poetry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Renowned historian and author Desmond Dudwa Phiri, better known as DD Phiri, yesterday called on Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) Primary School pupils to befriend books and that they should never stop reading if they want to gain knowledge.
