The Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb) has said it will continue making necessary preparations for the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations despite rumours that teachers would boycott invigilating the exams.<\/p>\n
Both Teachers Union of Malawi (Tum) President Willie Malimba and General Secretary Charles Kumchenga are quoted in the media as saying they would boycott the invigilation exercise for the examinations which are scheduled to start next Thursday, if the government fails to pay teachers their leave grants.<\/p>\n
However, Maneb Spokesperson, Simeon Maganga, said yesterday they were not aware of the development as the union has not communicated to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe work on official communication, in the absence of that, we cannot comment. What we know is that all preparations are at advanced stage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In a separate interview, Kumchenga confirmed not to have communicated to Maneb, saying the board works in collaboration with the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe board is supposed to liaise with the government to speed up the process because we have told all the teachers not to be engaged in government activities in the meantime because it is failing to honour our privileges,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
He, however, indicated that some developments are showing that some districts have started receiving teachers\u2019 leave grants, which may influence a change of mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we were waiting for is tangible evidence, that\u2019s what we have been saying all the time. At the moment, payment in four districts has already been deposited and any time teachers will be receiving their money. We have also been assured by the Accountant General that some districts will also have their payment by the end of today [yesterday],\u201d he said<\/p>\n
He further said if the pace remains the same, the union might rescind its decision of boycotting the invigilation exercise.<\/p>\n
About 146,000 students are expected to sit for this year\u2019s MSCE examinations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
