{"id":48529,"date":"2017-06-15T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T08:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=48529"},"modified":"2017-06-15T10:23:06","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T08:23:06","slug":"protesting-pupils-on-bail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/06\/15\/protesting-pupils-on-bail\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesting pupils on bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ntcheu Magistrate\u2019s Court, Wednesday, released on bail 23 people including 15 primary school pupils who were arrested in the district in connection with demonstrations they held in the district.<\/p>\n<p>Ntcheu Police Spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu, said apart from the pupils, the other eight suspects were believed to be parents of the pupils.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 23 are answering the charge of Intentionally Endangering the Safety of Persons Travelling by Road which is contrary to Section 237 of the Penal Code. They pleaded not guilty and the court has released them on bail on condition that they each pay K10,000 bail bond and produce two sureties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chigalu said the court has since adjourned the case to June 28 this year for further hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The pupils were demonstrating against the sit-in by their teachers who are demanding leave grant arrears.<\/p>\n<p>Similar demonstrations took place in Ndirande and Chirimba townships in Blantyre prompting various stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, to question the government\u2019s lukewarm response in dealing with the teachers\u2019 sit-in and the conduct of police officers against the pupils.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ntcheu Magistrate\u2019s Court, Wednesday, released on bail 23 people including 15 primary school pupils who were arrested in the district in connection with demonstrations they held in the district.
