{"id":4850,"date":"2015-06-25T08:41:43","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T08:41:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=4850"},"modified":"2015-06-25T08:41:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-25T08:41:43","slug":"malawi-government-asked-to-evaluate-tfta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/06\/25\/malawi-government-asked-to-evaluate-tfta\/","title":{"rendered":"Malawi government asked to evaluate TFTA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the signing of the Tripartite Free Trade Area two weeks ago, one of the country\u2019s marketers has asked the government to make a critical assessment on how Malawi could benefit from the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Candlex Limited General Manager Fredrick Changaya said while the country stands to benefit in the grand design, there is a need for further critical assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not too sure if we have done a due diligence as a country in terms of relative and comparative advantages with other economies,\u201d said Changaya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are landlocked and other economies are bigger than us. Based on the countries\u2019 economies, Malawi is the weaker economy in the tripartite,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Changaya said Malawi has suffered in terms of inward competition from countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe because the country does enjoy economies of scale in production.<\/p>\n<p>He said the authorities must have done their homework well before signing the agreement to ensure that the country benefits from the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to analyse what products we think will have the benefits of the TFTA arrangement.
