{"id":48478,"date":"2017-06-15T08:48:10","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T06:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=48478"},"modified":"2017-06-15T08:48:14","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T06:48:14","slug":"musicians-union-of-malawi-hails-swedish-musicians-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2017\/06\/15\/musicians-union-of-malawi-hails-swedish-musicians-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Musicians Union of Malawi hails Swedish Musicians Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) Wednesday thanked the Swedish Musicians Union for its support which has seen them holding training in unionism.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish Musicians Union last month gave Mum a K20 million funding for trainings in unionism.<\/p>\n<p>The first unionism workshop, which has attracted musicians from all Mum chapters and other stakeholders opened yesterday at Lingdazi Inn in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n<p>Mum President Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango said without Swedish Musicians Union coming in with the funding they could not have managed to hold such a workshop for musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a union we are struggling with funding to embark on different capacity building projects but Swedish Musicians Union has been there. And now they have provided funding and have also sent facilitators,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n<p>He assured Swedish Musicians Union of Mum\u2019s professionalism and proper handling of resources adding that they will work hard to make the project a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also would like to call upon fellow musicians to be united for the betterment of the industry. We can only move forward when we work together. We will make sure that we all benefit in terms of training and we also would like to thank the government for the moral support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Emre Sorkun from the Swedish Musicians Union said workers of the world should support each other\u2019s efforts to build a better world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to do our share field of international solidarity, Swedish Musicians Union is supporting Musicians Union of Malawi and Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU). We believe these workshops will make Mum and MCTU even stronger,\u201d Sorkun said.<\/p>\n<p>Sorkun said Swedish Musicians Union has been in partnership with Mum for close to 10 years and that they were impressed with their operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not only working with Mum but several other unions in Africa. We are satisfied with the projects Mum is involved in and this is why we have committed K20 million. We are actually also impressed with the work of the Women\u2019s Desk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Secretary for Civic Education, Culture and Community Development, Symon Maliko, told the gathering during the workshop that Mum is a nationally respected organisation, representing hundreds of musicians working in all sections of the music business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe workshop will equip members with union skills and in a way strengthen the union and participants of the training will become trainers of trainers,\u201d Maliko said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Mum plays a big part in government policy and that it was influential in shaping such policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic is at the very heart of who we are as a nation. Music has a strong illustrious heritage. Music has the power to bring people from all walks of life and from all over the world together to enjoy and engage with each other or a particular situation.
