The Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) has expressed concern over industry\u2019s failure to recognise its certificates.<\/p>\n
The development follows an initial Tracer Study the Authority conducted last year which found that Teveta graduates are being exploited by being offered low wages despite being qualified for particular jobs.<\/p>\n
Currently, the Authority has rolled out a national research in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development to assess the effectiveness and relevance of its programmes.<\/p>\n
In an interview, Teveta<\/p>\n
Senior Public Relations Specialist Lewis Msasa said the development is frustrating graduates from Tevet colleges.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we have seen is that when someone who has qualifications from Teveta is looking for a job and there is another person who does not have any qualification but knows the job, the employer recruits both and does not differentiate the wage rate,\u201d Msasa said.<\/p>\n
He attributed the industry\u2019s behaviour to the perception and attitudes employers have towards Teveta graduates despite having the skills and capacity in their various fields.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are coming from that background where those people who have skills are always looked down upon. You have a bricklayer or a welder who has skills but the fact that they considered artisans, is the reason they are not paid according to their skills and qualifications,\u201d Msasa said.<\/p>\n
The Tracer Study started on June 7 and is expected to be completed on June 27.<\/p>\n
