He just has to resign. If he does not, we will ask the president and the party’s Nec to expel him. It seems the position has become too big for him,” said Lilongwe Msozi South MP, Vitus Dzoole Mwale.

Dowa East MP, Richard Chimwendo Banda, said Kaliwo has for a long time not been working for the party.

“In recent years, there have been by-elections. However, he has not been participating in campaigns,” Chimwendo- Banda said.

Other MPs who spoke during the press conference were Patrick Chilondola (Dedza North), Lingson Belekenyama (Lilongwe Msinja South), Khumbize Kandodo- Chiponda (Kasungu South East), Madalitso Kazombo (Kasungu East) and Maxwell Thyolera (Lilongwe North East).

Chilondola, who is also MCP Chairman for the Central Region, said Kaliwo wants to bring confusion in the party.

“We are not happy with what he is doing. One thing that is very clear is that he does not understand the party’s constitution,” he said.

Lilongwe East MP, Ezekiel Ching’oma and Ntchisi South MP, Langton Nkhosa Kamwendo, also raised a number of issues against Kaliwo’s convention call.

Among the issues the MPs focused on were how emergency conventions are held and the process of identifying delegates.

“MCP is a party that is built on four cornerstones: unity, loyalty, obedience and discipline. He [Kaliwo] has been breaking the cornerstones,” Kandodo- Chiponda said.

But Kaliwo has faulted the MPs for raising the issues at a press conference.

“The Members of Parliament have my number. If they have issues, why are they not raising them with me? Why did they call a press conference?” Kaliwo said.

He said if people want him out of the party, they should just follow the constitution.

“They just have to follow procedures of expelling me. If they do not do that, they will also be breaking the party’s constitution. When calling for the convention, I believe I followed the party’s constitution. Those who are saying I am wrong, let’s discuss. I am just a phone call away. Even my secretary is based at the headquarters. They can go to the secretary and raise the issues with her. They will reach me,” Kaliwo said.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Members of Parliament (MPs) have said Secretary General Gustave Kaliwo should get out of the party.
