Sports administrators and some soccer lovers in the Northern Region have raised over K100, 000 to assist the ailing former Civo United and Flames star, Noel Mkandawire.<\/p>\n
The former attacking midfielder has been battling with a liver problem for nearly a month now.<\/p>\n
He is currently in his home village, Euthini, Mzimba District.<\/p>\n
He has been complaining of stomachache emanating from a swollen tummy.<\/p>\n
Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) General Secretary, Masiya Nyasulu, said the initiative was taken to show love and appreciation to Mkandawire\u2019s contribution to football in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs concerned parties, we just thought of doing something for Mkandawire while remembering what he did to the country\u2018s football by helping him in these trying moments. So far we have raised about K100, 000 and we are still mobilising more resources from other well-wishers. Thereafter we will go to visit him,\u201d Nyasulu said.<\/p>\n
Football Players Association of Malawi Chairperson, Alfred Lungu, said his association has nothing to do with a player who is not registered with it.<\/p>\n
Football Association of Malawi established the body to take charge of players\u2019 welfare in the country during their playing days and in retirement.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old Mkandawire started his professional football career with Civo in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n
He later joined Escom United in 2006, before returning to Civo in 2012.<\/p>\n
Mkandawire, nicknamed \u201cAmfumu\u201d, was part of Civo\u2019s squad in the 2014\/15 season but lacked game time due to stiff competition.<\/p>\n
He was later drafted into Civo Youth\u2019s coaching panel after hanging up his boots.<\/p>\n
He will best be remembered for his part in helping the Flames qualify for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
