Visual artist Ellis Singano opened his exhibition themed \u2018Turning the Tables\u2019 at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre last Saturday, selling eight batiks.<\/p>\n
Singano said he was happy with the development and that he was anticipating selling more of his works by the end of the exhibition.<\/p>\n
The exhibition will run for the whole month of June.<\/p>\n
This is Singano\u2019s second exhibition at the centre which is slowly turning into a heaven for artists in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am so happy that I managed to sell eight batiks on the opening day. I cannot disclose the amount. I was actually impressed with the turnout during the opening and this was despite having several activities in town on the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Visual artists have in the past bemoaned lack of interest from Malawians in embracing their works.<\/p>\n
But Singano feels the trend is now changing looking at the patronage at his exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want to call upon people to come and sample my works at Jacaranda Cultural Centre since the exhibition runs for the whole month of June,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Singano is exhibiting close to 17 paintings and one sculpture.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs someone who is specialising in batiks, it\u2019s an exhibition which has all batik works but I also have a sculpture which is made of soil and maize flour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Singano said it means a lot for him to have this exhibition which has works disseminating different messages.<\/p>\n
He said he is also using the exhibition to speak about the challenges that the country is facing, and that there is a need to change.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs an artist I have seen there is a problem. I am looking at a bus which is failing to move and by this I am referring to the country and the people,\u201d Singano said.<\/p>\n
Last year, Singano also exhibited 30 batiks, which run under the theme Journey Through the Light at the same venue.<\/p>\n
Jacaranda Cultural Centre and Maison de la France deputy director Daisy Belfield described Singano as talented.<\/p>\n
She said the exhibition was another opportunity for people to appreciate art and that this was part of their commitment to promoting Malawian art and invest in both developing and established creative talent across the country.<\/p>\n
She said having hosted Kungoni, which is under Mua Mission in Dedza from April to May, it was now time for people to attend Singano\u2019s exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u2018Turning the Tables\u2019 features a stunning new collection by Ellis Singano. The artist has compiled batiks and soil art installations to meditate on the political and social climate in contemporary Malawi,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Belfield added that the pieces ask some acerbic questions and present a challenge to re-assess political priorities.<\/p>\n
