AFTER failing on two attempts, Khungekile Matiya has been voted Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) President during elections held at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi yesterday.<\/p>\n
Clad in a white and blue dress, Matiya, who fell during the association\u2019s polls in 2009 and 2013, collected 37 votes against Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa\u2019s 9.<\/p>\n
From that moment, it was clear that candidates in Matiya\u2019s camp would carry the day.<\/p>\n
Chimwemwe Kachingwe retained the vice presidency with 37 votes whereas former Malawi Queens defender, Judith Chalusa, who is also the Southern Region Netball Committee Chairperson, got 9.<\/p>\n
Carol Bapu retained her position as general secretary when she amassed 38 votes against umpire Faggie Mwalweni\u2019s eight.<\/p>\n
Vice Treasurer Jane Kachali-Saidi, ascended to the post of treasurer with 38 votes while Charity Malanga got 8.<\/p>\n
The post of the vice treasurer went to Agnes Chaima who got 38 votes while Tamara Fweta, in absentia, got seven votes.<\/p>\n
Malawi National Council of Sports officials, Henry Mereka and Ruth Mzengo, and Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) Treasurer Henry Sakala, declared the elections as free and fair as returning officers.<\/p>\n
In her acceptance speech, Matiya, hailed her predecessor, Rosy Chinunda for contributing towards netball and called for team work in the development of the game.<\/p>\n
\u201cDrawing direct lessons from the game, my administration shall foster unity and team work. My board shall therefore work with all stakeholders in its efforts to promote and make the game great again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mpinganjira-Tasosa faulted some electoral flaws as a hindrance to free and fair elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cDelegates should be allowed to use their own transport and accommodation. All candidates should be given access to voters for campaign purposes. The notice for the elections was also just too short,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The polls saw Nam\u2019s long serving members, Rosy Chinunda and Abigail Shariff, humbly retiring from running the game\u2019s affairs.<\/p>\n
Chinunda asked the netball fraternity to join hands for the further development of the game.<\/p>\n
Nam last went to the polls in 2013 but since its 2009 annual general meeting, the association has failed to submit audited financial reports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
