Renowned visual artist Ellis Singano, who has exhibited his works in different platforms both inside and outside the country, will tomorrow officially launch his exhibition at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
The exhibition which runs from tomorrow through June 30 is titled \u2018Turning the Tables\u2019.<\/p>\n
Jacaranda Cultural Centre and Maison de la France deputy director Daisy Belfield said they were thrilled to open their fifth exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is another opportunity for people to appreciate art and this is part of our commitment to promoting Malawian art and to invest in both developing and established creative talent across the country,\u201d Belfield said.<\/p>\n
She said having hosted Kungoni which is under Mua Mission in Dedza from April to May, it was now time for people to experience Singano\u2019s exhibition.<\/p>\n
\u2018Turning the Tables\u2019 will feature a stunning new collection by Ellis Singano. The artist has compiled batiks and soil art installations to meditate on the political and social climate in contemporary Malawi,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Belfield added that the pieces ask some acerbic questions and present a challenge to re-assess political priorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cMalawi has an exceptional bank of creative talent, with a uniquely diverse range of voices \u2014each with urgent messages. As a centre we exist to provide a platform for those voices, by providing a venue which celebrates talent and exposes it to a national and international audience,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Belfield said Singano\u2019s politically-charged exhibition shows that now, more than ever, there is a live discourse between art and politics\u2014and that preserving the wealth of Malawi\u2019s art and culture is crucial in defining the future development of the country.<\/p>\n
Singano said through the exhibition, he wants to use art to speak about the challenges that the country is currently facing and that there was a need to change.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am an artist yes, but I want to use my art to help develop the country. I have seen there is a problem. I am looking at a bus which is failing to move and this I am referring to the country and the people,\u201d Singano said.<\/p>\n
Last year, the artist also exhibited 30 batiks which run under the theme Journey through the light.<\/p>\n
This time around with \u2018Turning the Tables\u2019, the visual artist who has specialised in batik, said he will exhibit 15 pieces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
