Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Henry Mussa has hailed the Chinese government for its continued support to Malawi.<\/p>\n
According to Mussa, China is supporting youths in different initiatives which are aimed at improving their welfare, a thing which he said is in line with his ministry\u2019s agenda<\/p>\n
He said this in Lilongwe at a welcome ceremony for 24 young people who underwent a three-week-long seminar on employment and development in the Asian country.<\/p>\n
Mussa said young people need skills which they can use to improve their businesses in the midst of high unemployment rates.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are saying we can reduce poverty by harnessing the demographic dividend through investments in youth and this training is part of such a drive. We want young people in the country to be given the opportunity to do business and employ others,\u201d Mussa said.<\/p>\n
He added that China\u2019s progress in the last few years, when its focus was on young people, is something that Malawi can learn from.<\/p>\n
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Shi Ting Wang observed that high unemployment rates among Malawi\u2019s youths is one of the biggest barriers to development.<\/p>\n
He has since urged the Malawi government to respect the dreams of young people, stimulate their enthusiasm, inspire their spirit of innovation and create bigger stages for them.<\/p>\n
\u201cNowadays, we the Chinese are happy with our African friends\u2019 awareness of the importance of youth deployment\u2026 But youth development is a long-term task. In the 1970s, China was almost in the same situation [as Malawi], but we have successfully solved the problem,\u201d Shi Ting said.<\/p>\n
One of the seminar\u2019s participants Solomon Mlinda said Malawi can move up the development ladder by learning from other countries that have done well because China itself learnt from others.<\/p>\n
The seminar was part of initiatives by the African Union that African governments should provide opportunities for 100 youth in business every year.<\/p>\n
The union\u2019s representative for Southern African Regional Office Auguste Ngomo said youth\u2019 potential needs to be harnessed so that they contribute to the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, China has pledged that it will construct five technical colleges in the country which will be fitted with everything so that they will be ready for use the moment they are handed over to the Malawi Government<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
