{"id":4708,"date":"2015-06-23T09:20:55","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T09:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=4708"},"modified":"2015-06-23T09:20:55","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T09:20:55","slug":"china-promotes-safe-water-in-chiradzulu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2015\/06\/23\/china-promotes-safe-water-in-chiradzulu\/","title":{"rendered":"China promotes safe water in Chiradzulu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As one way of promoting safe and clean water in rural communities in the country, China has constructed two boreholes in Chiradzulu South Constituency.<\/p>\n<p>Following the development, the Chinese government has now constructed 600 boreholes in different parts throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>Handing over the boreholes to communities of Monjeza and Maera in Sub Traditional Authority Mpunga in the district, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Zhang Qingyang emphasised the importance of clean water to communities.<\/p>\n<p>The envoy said China will continue to assist Malawi in the promotion of clean and safe water, especially in rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to see Malawians living a healthy life by drinking safe and clean water. The boreholes we are handing over today will also benefit pupils from nearby schools as they will have easy access to clean water,\u201d said Qingyang.<\/p>\n<p>He further said the Chinese government is also committed to improving trade and the economy of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to help Malawians improve their living standards through trade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving the boreholes on behalf of the communities, Minister of Industry and Trade, who is also Member of Parliament for the area, Joseph Mwanamvekha, said access to clean water is a serious problem in the area.<\/p>\n<p>He said community members from the two areas were drinking water from unprotected sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were drinking together with animals, which was very unhealthy. Today, we are happy to receive these boreholes as they will improve the living standards of the people,\u201d said Mwanamvekha.<\/p>\n<p>One of the community members Cecilia Maiden thanked the Chinese government for rescuing them from the hardships they faced in accessing clean water.<\/p>\n<p>She said waterborne diseases were the order of the day in the area and women had to walk long distances in search of clean water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spent most of our times either at a hospital or out fetching water. My household chores were affected as I had to wake up as early as 4am to draw water only to return in the afternoon,\u201d Maiden said.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from handing over the boreholes, the Chinese government also donated food items to 400 households and 40 balls to the communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As one way of promoting safe and clean water in rural communities in the country, China has constructed two boreholes in Chiradzulu South Constituency.
