The continuous stable supply of power by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) over the past two months has been described as a key factor in addressing production challenges which rocked many companies.<\/p>\n
The country has faced electricity challenges for some time, which saw prolonged load-sheddings of up to 12 hours in a day.<\/p>\n
The power blackouts affected negatively the business community, with most production companies scaling down their productivity.<\/p>\n
Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) Chief Operating Officer, Chimwemwe Luhanga, said the industry has been running very expensive business by producing products using power generators.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a very welcome development to the industry that we now have stable power supply and we would like to encourage Escom to continue with the stable supply of the electricity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand that Escom is currently diversifying its energy sources and perhaps in the long term, we would have a situation where we would have more reliable electricity for the industry to do business, and reduce that as an obstacle to do business,\u201d Luhanga said.<\/p>\n
He said the MCCCI Malawi Business Climate Survey has rated electricity as a key obstacle in doing business hence, if there is an improvement it means it is a good response to the needs of the industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnergy is one of the factors of production and therefore if Engenco and Escom can supply us with power then our wish to see the industry become more productive will be achieved.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe generation is still low, but there is still relief that now the producers are able to use power from the grid and produce their products at a reasonable price,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Energy, Bright Msaka, assured the nation and the business community of continued stable power supply as the government is working tirelessly to make sure that electricity is available all the time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
