The European Union (EU) has called for speedy implementation of decisive measures to deal with corruption.<\/p>\n
The measures came out of the national conference on corruption held recently in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
EU Ambassador to Malawi Marchel Germann, while confirming the EU\u2019s continued commitment to investing in the country, said currently the country seems to have no prescription to treat the ailment of corruption as it remains extensive in various sectors of development.<\/p>\n
Germann has said there is need for government to do its utmost in resource utilisation for the union to be able to convince their taxpayers to continue supporting the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, Malawi has not found the right medicine to deal with corruption because corruption is still rampant. But I think the conference that the country had on corruption is a very good start of becoming very effective,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
The EU Ambassador, who was speaking on Friday in Lilongwe during the commemoration of EU Day, said the coming together of stakeholders to discuss corruption was a clear indication that the country is losing the battle in the fight against it.<\/p>\n
He, however, said the EU is committed to being a strong partner for the creation of jobs, growth and investments in the country and support further national priorities for the country\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially, our relationship had a strong focus on development cooperation; today, it is much broader and includes important political, trade and investment dimension. Increasingly, the EU and Malawi are discussing and working more closely together on pressing global issues such as security and climate change and population growth,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Bright Msaka, who spoke on behalf of Malawi government at the event, said government acknowledges the existence of corruption that is why it has put in place measures to deal with the vice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have made progress, I can\u2019t remember when government called everybody to meet around to discuss the means of fighting corruption. It is an important step that we have taken. If you are pushing it under the carpet pretending it doesn\u2019t exist, then you can\u2019t resolve it,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
Msaka added that the resumption of budgetary support by World Bank, to a tune of $80 million, is a sign that the country is gaining confidence among the development partners.<\/p>\n
He has commended the continued relationship with EU and reaffirmed the country\u2019s commitment to work closely with the union at bilateral, regional and international levels in promoting sustainable economic development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
