The Malawi Girl Guide Association (Magga) has urged young people in the country to be proactive and take part in different initiatives in their respective communities.<\/p>\n
Magga says there are some seemingly small activities like cleaning surroundings which young people can undertake so that they contribute to development.<\/p>\n
The non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently organised an event through which girls from various schools in Lilongwe\u2019s Area 25 cleaned the township\u2019s market.<\/p>\n
Magga Programmes Coordinator Isabel Kang\u2019ombe said the activity was aimed at strengthening the girls\u2019 position in their responsibility to take care of the environment and promote sanitation.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a non-governmental, non-political, non-profit organisation which works under the umbrella organisation of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, our mission is to empower young girls and women to reach their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn line with our project\u2019s aim of reaching the girl child in all aspects of life including education and sanitation, the charity activity also ensured that we send a message that everyone has a role to play in matters to do with sanitation,\u201d said Kang\u2019ombe.<\/p>\n
One of the girls who participated in the activity Ruth Chadza said what they are taught in school that they have to ensure high standards of hygiene has to be put in practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe learn that we have to practise sanitation wherever we are. This activity shows that together, we can deal with problems to do with sanitation. The place was dirty and now it is clean and admirable,\u201d Chadza said.<\/p>\n
With funding from KF Norway, Malawi is one of the nine countries in the Youth Exchange South to South programme which aims to empower young girls by giving them an opportunity to work in Girl Guides Associations in the countries within the programme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
