I only have one answer: Malala is the Best Acoustic Artist.”

Malala’s response attracted applause from the audience and he said later in an interview that he deserved the award.

“Those who have listened to my songs and watched my performances will attest I deserve the award,” said the musician famed for songs ‘Mzanga Bulaki’ and ‘Nyumba Ya Ngongole.’

Some quarters have also questioned Gwamba’s credibility in winning the Gospel Artist of the Year and Miracle Chinga Moffat’s scooping of the Best Female Artist.

“I have no problems with the other names but what did Gwamba do as a gospel artist? He didn’t deserve this award. Miracle Chinga Moffat, how many songs does she have on the ground? At least if it was her late mother,” said one of the fans on social media.

Several people have been angered by the awards on social media while others have welcomed the awards saying the organisers need to be encouraged and that they just need to improve in some areas.

“For me much as the awards have a long way to go, I still commend them. They have done a good job but let them sit down and critically look at the categories and improve next year,” a fan, Dyson Tembo, said.

A member of the Edgar ndi Davis Band, Davis Njobvu, who performed on the night also commended the organisers for the awards but was quick to say they need to improve in a lot of areas.

“For instance, tonight, we had to run around to get equipment to perform live. We do not perform with a CD and they could have put this in order. On the awards they could have done better, I think it’s a question of sitting down and looking at the categories critically,” Njobvu said.

The awards also received criticism after the organisers released the names of the nominees.

On the night, Nyau King Tay Grin was the toast of the moment when he claimed three awards.

Tay Grin collected the Best Male Artist, Best Live Act and Best Video Awards during the inaugural award which delayed to start and spilled over to the early hours of Saturday.

The ‘Chipapapa’ star, who performed earlier on before collecting his three awards and also closed the chapter, thanked God for the talent.

“First of all let me thank the Almighty God for the talent. I also would like to thank my mother for allowing me to show my talent. Again all this success is because of the team I have,” he said.

The artist thanked people for voting for him but also hailed the organisers for creating the Nyasa Music Awards.

“This is a great thing for sure. We need to come together to develop Malawi music and this cannot be done by one person, it needs all of us and we need to push to penetrate all the other platforms such as Channel 0,” Tay Grin said.

Theo Thomson also smiled on the night when he scooped the Album of the Year Award for The White Elephant. On top of the trophy, Theo received a K200,000 cheque courtesy of Nico.

“We worked very hard and pushed our music. Thank you for those who voted,” Theo said.

Faith Mussa, who will be performing at the Glastonbury Festival in United Kingdom in June, got the Best Single Award for his song ‘Mdidi.’

The artist, who performed at the event, also earned himself an air ticket courtesy of CBR Tours.

The Best Reggae Artist award went to Anthony Makondetsa with Best Duo or Group going to Black Missionaries. Both of them were not around as they were having performances in the Northern region over the weekend.

The other awards went to BFB for Best Producer, Fredokiss (Best Hip Hop Artist), Piksy (Best Afro Pop, Lulu (Best Secular), Kell Kay (Best R&B), DJ Rubie (Best Club DJ), Joy Nathu (Best Radio DJ), Purple C (Best New Comer) and Tay Grin and Malinga Mafia (Best video)

Veteran promoter and lawyer Jai Banda, popularly known as Mr Entertainer, was decorated with a Lifetime Achiever award for helping uplift the music industry through his Entertainers Promotions.

“I am thankful for this award. I have been there in music supporting artists from the days of Bright ‘Livewire’ Nkhata and I have given names to artists for their good work. Just as you have done supporting me, supporting my son Tonderai, who is now at the helm of Team Entertainers,” Jai said.

The Best Male and Female Artists also received air tickets courtesy of Malawian Airlines.

The awards are run by Mathambo Lowole, Chifundo Maganga and James Makunje.

Makunje said it was not easy for them to put together the event.

“We worked very hard and this is very nice. The youth have brilliant ideas but they are sidelined. We would like to thank sponsors for believing in us and we are here to stay,” he said.

Dali and Ethel Kamwendo Banda were some of the artists who performed on the night while Joseph Nkasa did not perform.

THE inaugural Nyasa Music Awards held at Comesa Hall in Blantyre on Friday have received heavy criticism from different people.
