Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president Enoch Chihana says he would step down if he loses the party elections during a convention in September this year.<\/p>\n
His statement comes at a time when some Aford supporters have formed Revamping Aford Movement (Ramo), aimed at bringing back the party\u2019s lost glory by luring back former members and enticing new members to join the grouping.<\/p>\n
Chihana, in an interview, conceded the party is dead and needs some miraculous power to bring it back to life.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was elected leader when it was already dead. I found the party already dead when I came from South Africa. The struggle for leadership killed the party,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He, however, said all is not lost as he is restructuring the party ahead of its convention.<\/p>\n
We have made a lot of mistakes, we have been casual in the way we handled issues but it is now over, Aford is set to come back on the political scene with a bang,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said in June, there will be a regional conference for the party in the North, then Centre and South, to be preceded by a women conference and a youth conference, before the convention in September.<\/p>\n
He said he would accept results of the poll during the convention.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am a democrat at heart, my father was a real democrat. I will go by the wish of the people. If I lose, I will step down and be an ordinary member of the party,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Aford was the first party to register in multiparty Malawi and swept away all the 33 parliamentary seats in the North during the 1994 general elections.<\/p>\n
However, things turned sour for Aford when most senior members of the party refused to leave the Bakili Muluzi cabinet when the Aford\/UDF alliance came to an end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
