MALAWI Congress Party\u2019s (MCP)\u00a0 Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo and his deputy Eisenhower Mkaka yesterday made contradictory statements on when the party will hold its convention.<\/p>\n
Kaliwo, who was accompanied by some of the party\u2019s district chairmen, held a press conference in Blantyre were he announced that the party will hold a convention from July 7 to 9.<\/p>\n
However, Mkaka trashed Kaliwo\u2019s statement arguing that the decision as to when the party should hold a convention is made by the National Executive Committee (Nec) not the Secretary General alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cNational Executive Committee is the highest authority and as of now it has not communicated about the convention. This means that the party is not aware. We will wait to hear from the National Executive Committee,\u201d Mkaka said.<\/p>\n
However, Kaliwo said according to the mandate given to him by the party\u2019s constitution, he has the power to make the announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe power invested in me by the constitution of the Malawi Congress Party gives me the mandate to call for a convention even without consulting the president of the party. The constitution allows the Secretary General to call for a convention with the approval from more than half of the district committees.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese committees that have gathered here are the owners of the party and have requested me to announce the convention and that is exactly what I have done today,\u201d Kaliwo said.<\/p>\n
Kaliwo did not clarify whether the purported convention will appoint new leadership saying the committees will decide on issues they want to be tackled.<\/p>\n
Kaliwo stated that the decision to hold the purported convention is final unless the court rules otherwise because he is just fulfilling his constitutional mandate. He also mentioned that the purported convention will only be attended by delegates that attended the 2013 convention.<\/p>\n
Kaliwo also hinted on sour relationships in the MCP as he disclosed that he has not been in speaking terms with the party\u2019s President Lazarus Chakwera since August last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
